Fearful Of Noises
If your dog is fearful of noises and/or storms, there are several ways you can help them feel safer and more comfortable during these events.
You can support your dog by:
- Setting up a safe space: provide a quiet, secure area where your dog can go when they feel scared. This may be a crate with the door left open, a covered den-like area, or a quiet room with comfortable bedding. Some dogs even like being in the bathtub or shower when storms are happening, for example. Allow your dog to choose where they feel safest.
- Playing background noise or music: music, white noise, or the television can help muffle outside sounds such as thunder, fireworks, wind, or rain. Calming music may also help.
- Speaking with your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication: for dogs with significant fear or panic, medication may help reduce distress and improve their ability to cope. Your veterinarian can discuss whether short-term or long-term medication options may be appropriate for your dog.
During storms or loud noise events, try to remain calm and avoid forcing your dog to interact or go outside if they are frightened. Allow them to seek comfort where they feel safest.
Comforting your dog will not reinforce their fear; imagine if someone told you to ‘just get over it’ at your fear of spiders - it wouldn’t help. Comfort should always be offered when they are scared.
